Reason for Farmers Suicide - Pshycological Probelm - New Finding?

The below posting is one of my Old mails. Still it is relevant to share

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Please read the Last lines first

While Everybody aware of the reason behind the suicides of Farmers in India. The State and the Indian bureaucrats say the Farmers are Mad...

To say this one should be Inhuman, cruel person. And our State(Govt) is like that.

While the Administration gives Low Interest Loans and Subsidies and Import duty hike to Nurture the Wine Industry in Maharastra, It did nothing to improve the situation in Vidharbha, The same maharastra were suicides become rampant.

And even the Administration has done some aggravating actions that kills more farmers there.

As of today(January Mid) from June 2005 more than 300 Farmers have commited suicide.

Numbers....we need Numbers to kindle our humanity........Bullshit....

But for the Administration even the Numbers won't do that job. Because there is nothing they aware as Humanity.

Fun Land Called Vidharbha (Sarcastic)

See below the various techniques suggested and various Measures practiced by Government:

(The govt says these are to stop suicides but even layman knows these all are cosmetics to cover the real ugly terrifying face of the Government)

All the below suggests that the Govt tries forge that the real problem in Vidharbha and in the whole country is because the whole rural population become Mentals(Mad).

* The many ways in which officials in a region gripped by crisis try to deal with it can be intriguing. Even entertaining. From advising farmers to plant crops in line with favourable zodiac signs to suggesting they bear arms against moneylenders - small village lender(like next house etc).

* "atma vishwas jagruti abhiyan" campaigns. To boost the morale of a farming community which rocked by Suicides. They have some 13 such programs.

* when the family of Hiraman Patil was denied compensation after his suicide in 2004. The son says: "He took his life because of tension over his debts,"

Govt Says: "He had killed himself because he was depressed over his wife's death." There was a glitch in that argument. Hiraman's wife had died 15 years ago.

* R.R. Patil's (Home ministers Idea)

Give Guns to Farmers to protect themselfs from Money lenders....

While the farmers unable to afford money for their food how come they afford for ammunition required for Guns.

To crown all these Farce, the below:

A more well meaning effort was the despatch in 2004 of teams to `counsel' the distressed farmers. With advice from psychologists, doctors and revenue officials. In one village, after a long discussion with such a team, A farmer asked them: "You've given us great advice on so many things. On combating stress, curbing our drinking and so on. And you've asked us so many probing questions, too. Now ask us one more. Ask us why farmers, who produce the nation's food, are themselves starving."

Growing suicide rates in Maharashtra is more a social problem...the factors leading to such a psychological issue are the socio-economic factors..
Agriculture’s contribution to the Gross domestic produce in India has reduced from 56 per
cent in 1950-1 to 25 per cent in 2001-2 whereas as per the 2001 census 58 per cent of the
total workers are still dependent on agriculture either as cultivators or agricultural labourers.
This only shows that rural non-farm employment opportunities are limited and people in rural areas, who are dependent on farm sector are left with no employment and hence ,,this suicides...
In a study it was found that the suicide rates were high among the age group between 30-44 among males, the most productive age group in a society. Among females it was 15-29 years.

From 1995 to 2004, suicide deaths in Maharashtra increased from 11866 to 14729.
Psychological issue is only the final result of certain precipitating factors that lead to suicudes. In this study indebtedness was the most seriuos reason for suicide ..about 86%.
What does this show other than poverty and as a result frustration..
It is shocking when we see the govt's reaction towards giving compenstion to Hiraman Patil...
This study says that the reason that death of a family member driving to suicide is only 10%..
Govt should realise that there are lots of risk factors that aggravate each other, driving the farmers to opt for this extreme step..and also realise that all the factors are the result of poverty and indebtness...
This was the reccomendation given by the study bench

"Whether an individual is eligible/ineligible for
receiving compensation, the vulnerability of the surviving members of a household
increases and more so if the deceased happens to be one of the major income earners. In
fact, it would be appropriate to provide help to all suicide case households."
This was the study conducted by the govt..and not by any individual..then why do they give these lame excuses...

மனிதர்களின் அடிப்படைத் தேவைகளான நிலம், உணவு, வேலை இது இருந்தாலே பல தற்கொலைகள் தவிர்க்கப்படலாம்.

மங்கை

Anyway, thank you for the farmers suicide article... have you heard of Dr. Vandhana Shiva?

she says this too;

...Dr. Vandana Shiva, Director, Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology has called the suicides of more than 40,000 farmers a genocide. This genocide is a result of deliberate policy imposed by the WTO and the World Bank, implemented by the Government, which is designed to destroy small farmers and transform Indian agriculture into large scale corporate industrial farming....
and more, the truth revealed in there is shocking... please visit this link and look for a title under"""Farmers' genocide """ you both Mangai and yourself will be amazed...
thangs again.

Welcom Mangai,

Welcome orani,

//This genocide is a result of deliberate policy imposed by the WTO and the World Bank, implemented by the Government, which is designed to destroy small farmers and transform Indian agriculture into large scale corporate industrial farming//

Yes it is true,

Who will fight against this??

It is we should drive away the world exploiters out of our Mother India. and finally out of the world.

There are people who talks about adoring our mothers bossom with flowers while she is being sexually harassed by MNCs.

The chain of reform policies annouced by the govt follows the WTO aggreements it made with Imperialist countries.

They are like Pimps marketting their own mother and sisters....
++++++++

Thanks a Lot for the link you provided. I will read and will post the comemnt here itself or would write a new posting.

I know Vandana Shiva who actively participated in organising people against many anti people MNC activities. I admire her a lot and I have read her articles in 'Blue gold'.

But people like her's(see, I didn't dishonor her) that is NGO's activities are limited. They can expose and mobilise people against these atrocities. But for solution. they have no option. Hope yu didn't missunderstand me. If i am wrong please correct me.

Thanks a Lot,
Asuran.

Sorry Orani,
